Objective

To make it easier for consumers to donate groceries to their local food banks

Process

Community Carts was an idea that I first pitched during a hack-a-thon. Spoiler: I didn't win, but I did find a product manager after the fact to help me build it anyways. Our goal was to make donating food as easy as ordering groceries for yourself. And we did that by creating custom wish lists for food banks that consumers could easily shop from straight from the Instacart app. All you had to do was a pick a food bank to support, select the items you wanted to donate, and an Instacart shopper delivered the items straight to the food banks door!

My Role

My primary role was to recruit food banks to participate in the program and make sure that that the product we were building fit their needs. This meant getting buy in from our nonprofit partner, Feeding America, and working closely with them to design all the elements. In the end, we got 120+ food banks to sign up and we had a growing waitlist.

Results

We launched Community Carts as part of our Giving Tuesday Campaign in 2022, and it was a huge success. In just a few weeks, we raised over 80,000 most needed items for 100+ food banks across the country.
